India is a south Asian country that covers the most part of the Indian sub-continent. It has borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Afghanistan.
India has the world’s tenth largest economy. It has the world’s second largest population, at more than 1 billion. Caste has been a major determining factor of social hierarchy, along with religion and language.
India is home to the Indus Valley civilization - one of the oldest civilizations.
Four main religions are found here: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, and all originated here.
A number of European countries [Portugal, Netherlands, France and Britain] established colonies in India. Much of India was brought under Direct British control after the so-called Indian Mutiny of 1857.
During the 20th century, a long non-violent struggle for independence was led by Mahatma Gandhi. India subsequently gained independence in 1947 to become a republic. It has a President who fulfills a largely ceremonial role. The government is headed by a Prime Minister and parliaments are elected for five year terms. India is a one of the world’s nuclear powers.
In recent years the Indian economy has expanded enormously as a result of economic reforms. A quarter of Indians still live in poverty, but a large affluent middle class is emerging due to expansion in information technology, where it is one the world’s largest providers, and the service industries. India also has the world’s largest movie film industry.
Indian society is largely pluralist and multicultural. English has remained a language common to the whole nation, along side the multiplicity of regional languages. Education is highly regarded across the social spectrum. Traditional Indian family values are regarded very highly, although urban families are increasingly adopting the nuclear family model.
