Tim Winton, a passionate Fremantle Dockers supporter, was born in Perth in 1960 and currently resides in a small coastal town in Western Australia with his wife and three children. Many of Tim Winton’s stories ironically incorporate the sea, in which he nearly drowned as a young boy.
He has also named Moby Dick as an influence. He is an active campaigner for the protection of ecology and environmental conservation. Also, his Christian faith continues to play a significant role in his life and work.
While attending Curtin University, Winton began his full-time writing career with his first novel, An Open Swimmer, which won the Vogel Award in 1981. Shallows (1984), Cloudstreet (1991) and The Riders (1995) are award-winning novels, which have achieved international success. Lockie Leonard, Human Torpedo and That Eye, The Sky have been adapted as dramatisations. The latter has also been made into a film as well as In the Winter Dark.
Following the success of Dirt Music, The Turning is the last of nine novels that Tim Winton has published over more than twenty years. He has also published four non-fiction texts, six children’s books and four collections of short stories. One of his stories was selected for inclusion in Oxford and Penguin anthologies of Australian short stories.
Tim Winton is patron of the sponsored ‘Tim Winton Award for Young Writers’. His important place in Australian literature has been celebrated in a book of essays entitled Tim Winton: A Celebration, created by Friends of the National Library of Australia.
