Andrew John Bovell was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1962. He is an acclaimed playwright and screenwriter. In 2002, he was awarded Scriptwriter of the Year by the London Film Critics Guide. Bovell has adapted many novels and plays for film, including Head On (1998) and Strictly Ballroom (1992), which both won screenplay awards.
After the success of Lantana, Bovell has been highly sought after as an international screenwriter. He has worked in England and America on adaptations of novels and plays for the screen, including The Book of Revelation and Chaos.
Andrew Bovell adapted his play, Speaking In Tongues, to create the screenplay of Lantana, for which he won the Australian Writers Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. After the film was first released in 2001, it won numerous Australian Film Industry Awards and International Film Industry Awards in acting, directing and film categories.
It was also a great success with audiences at the Sydney, Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals. Lantana is rated R for language and sexuality. It was produced by Jan Chapman and the Australian Film Finance Corporation and was filmed at various locations in Sydney.
Ray Lawrence is an Australian director. In 1985, he directed his first film, Bliss, which is an adaptation of Peter Carey’s novel. In 2001, he was praised by critics, actors and audiences for his direction of Lantana. In 2005, he directed the feature film, Jindabyne, which is a psychological drama.
