Tim O’Brien was born in Minnesota. In 1968, he graduated from Macalester College in St Paul. In 1969, he began one year of military service as a soldier in Vietnam. He attended Harvard University and graduated from his studies in Government. He worked as a reporter for The Washington Post.
His novel, Going After Cacciato (1978), was awarded the National Book Award for fiction in 1979. The Things They Carried (1990) was highly acclaimed and nominated for the 'National Book Critics Circle Award' and 'Pulitzer Prize'.
His work has been published in many magazines and his short stories have appeared in textbooks and collections. In the Lake of the Woods (1994) achieved status as a bestseller and was named as the best novel of 1994 by Time magazine and also chosen as one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times.
