Khaled Hosseini was born in Afghanistan in 1965. His father was a diplomat and his mother worked as a language and history teacher in Kabul. He was the oldest of five children, who experienced a privileged upbringing in Kabul.

In 1980, the family received political asylum in the USA from the political occupation of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union. The family moved to San Jose, California, where Hosseini became a medical doctor and Afghan-American community member.

The Kite Runner is Khaled Hosseini’s first novel. It has attracted international attention and acclaim as the first novel written in English by an Afghan. The protagonist of The Kite Runner, Amir, is partly an autobiographical representation of the author. The novel is set in both America and Afghanistan and reflects the political history of Afghanistan.
