I for Isobel - Study Map

Amy Witting was born Joan Fraser in the inner Sydney suburb of Armadale in 1918. She taught English and French at state secondary schools. In 1953, Witting was diagnosed with TB after a routine school check, and it was while she was confined to the Bodington Sanatorium that she began to write more seriously.

She was short listed for the 'Miles Franklin Award' in 1990 for I for Isobel. In 1993 she was awarded the 'Patrick White Prize'. She died a few weeks after her last novel was published in September 2001.
