Paul Maurice Kelly was born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1955. He was the sixth child in a family of nine children, who were raised by their mother, Josephine, who was also a singer. Paul Kelly’s grandparents were pioneers for music in Australia. They founded the first Italian opera company in Australia. His grandfather, Count Ercole Filippini, was a baritone and his grandmother, Contessa Filippini was the first female symphony orchestra conductor in Australia.

Paul Kelly attended a Christian Brothers school in Adelaide, where he studied trumpet and piano and also played football and cricket. He discontinued his study of Arts at Flinders University after one year and learned guitar while travelling around Australia. He began writing poems, songs and prose. In 1974, his first public singing performance was in Hobart. In 1976, he moved to Melbourne, where he has produced more than twenty albums and where he is still based.

Paul Kelly has earned great respect as a contemporary Australian songwriter over three decades. He has achieved status as a poet, lyricist and cultural icon. His work addresses a vast range of human experiences. He has also collaborated on music for numerous theatre productions and films, such as Lantana. Paul Kelly has been awarded ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) 'Best Male Performer' twice and 1999 'Song Writer of the Year' by the Australasian Performing Rights Association. He has also entered the ARIA Hall of Fame and two tribute albums to his songs have been produced.
