Wayne Macauley is from the outer suburbs of Melbourne, which are the inspiration for the setting of Blueprints for a Barbed-Wire Canoe. The distance and quietness that characterises the outer suburban landscape provide his imaginative landscape and have allegorical significance for the writer, who delves into the realm of possibility in his work. Blueprints for a Barbed-Wire Canoe was published in 2004. Though Macauley wrote the novel ten years earlier, it challenges the currently relevant notion of the suburban dream and poses questions about city planning.
Wayne Macauley’s stories have been published in numerous magazines, including Meanjin, Arena, HQ, Overland and Westerly. In 1995, Macauley won The Age Short Story Competition. His work also appeared in the anthology, Best Australian Stories 2001. Macauley has also written for the theatre for many years and was a founding member of the Institute of Complex Entertainment. He has been the recipient of a grant from the Australia Council Literature Board to complete a collection of short fiction. In 1995, Wayne Macauley published his second novel, Caravan Story.
