Anne Tyler was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, in 1941. She was the eldest of four children and the only daughter in her family. During her childhood, she moved around southern America with her parents before they settled in North Carolina. She gained a full-scholarship to study at Duke University, where she first won a creative writing award.

She married Taghi Modarressi, an Iranian physicist, in 1963, and they later moved to Montreal, where she began to focus on writing fiction. They had two daughters. Tyler’s husband died in 1997.

Tyler has published sixteen novels and almost fifty short stories. Her first novel, If Morning Ever Comes, was published in 1964. Tyler’s fame increased when The Accidental Tourist was published in 1985. It won the 'National Book Critics Circle' Award and was adapted and released as an award-winning film in 1988.

Tyler’s novel, Breathing Lessons, was published in 1988 and won the 'Pulitzer Prize' in 1989. Tyler typically writes stories set in southern American cities with an emphasis on middle-class American families.
