Reginald Rose (December 10, 1920 – April 19, 2002) was an American film and television writer most widely known for his work in the early years of television drama. His play Twelve Angry Men was adapted from his 1954 teleplay, which had the same title. He wrote this teleplay for the CBS Studio One anthology television series.
He was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York, in the United States of America. He attended Townsend High School and briefly attended City College (now part of the City University of New York) from 1937 - 1938. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-46. Here, he attained the rank of first lieutenant.
Twelve Angry Men is a play in Two Acts. It is a contemporary courtroom drama (contemporary to 1950s New York). The style of performance is naturalistic. The intended production, as indicated through the stage directions, is a realist performance, with characters’ attire, props and the set and setting being specified by the playwright, Reginald Rose, and confirmed in the Furniture and Property List, the Lighting Plot and the Effects Plot, which appear as end notes to the published play. These all assist to create the play, which is a Drama, as the plot is driven by the conversations and the physical interaction and tensions which are generated between the characters.
