Tobias Wolff was born in Alabama in 1945 and travelled around the country with his mother they finally settled in Washington State, where he grew up. He was a student at the Hill School in Pennsylvania until he was expelled for repeatedly failing Mathematics in his final year, after which he joined the Army.
Wolff spent four years as a paratrooper, including time in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he attended Oxford University in England, where he received a First Class Honours degree in English in 1972.
