Mark Haddon was born in Northampton, England, in 1962. In 1981, he graduated from Merton College, Oxford, and in 1984, he completed his masters in English Literature at Edinburgh University. He is married to Sos Eltis, who is a fellow in English Literature. The couple spent one year in Boston and now live in Oxford with their two children. Mark enjoys extreme sports such as marathon canoeing.

Mark has worked for several organisations with both children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. He worked as a magazine illustrator and cartoonist until he became dissatisfied and then began selling his works of abstract art. He has been involved with many television projects as an award-winning creator and writer.

Mark has written and illustrated numerous successful children’s books. In 1987, he published his first children’s picture book, Gilbert’s Gobstopper. As was the author’s intention, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is Mark’s first novel for older readers. In 2003, it was nonetheless published for both young adult readers and adults simultaneously.

It has since become an international success and won the 'Whitbread Book of the Year' Award. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time has been published in fifteen languages and sold in thirty-two countries.
