Hannie Rayson was born and grew up in Melbourne. She graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts as a drama student and has an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from La Trobe University, where she was also a writer-in-residence. She also worked in this capacity at the Playbox Theatre, Monash University, the VCA and Mill Theatre. Her plays have achieved success both in Australia and overseas.
Some of her successful plays include Falling From Grace (1994), Competitive Tenderness (1996), Life After George (2000). Her latest play is Two Brothers, which was performed by the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2005. Hotel Sorrento (1990) was made into a feature film in 1995 and was nominated for ten Australian awards.
Hannie Rayson has achieved great success as an Australian playwright. Her plays are centred on family dramas in Australian settings and focus on contemporary social and political issues.
Rayson’s outrage about important political issues and human rights inspire her to write realistic, engaging and challenging plays. She uses theatre to scrutinize the human condition. She does not classify her works as ‘issues plays’ or ‘corridor theatre’, but rather aims to present complex truthful depictions of the reality of society.
